Great Tool!  
This is a nifty little knife sharpener! Works GREAT and fits nicely in the coffee cup I keep on the counter to store "quick grab items" (like kitchen scissors). One other bonus- the noise often affiliated with a knife sharpener (you know- the one that makes your teeth hurt!) is not nearly as bad with this tool. Not as good as its reputation wont give you a razors edge  
Ive hand-sharpened knives for 25 or so years now and have tried nearly every sharpening system and sharpening materials out there. In all of my considerable experience (sorry if that sounds a bit cocky) nothing beats hand-sharpening on flat whetstones that have a high grit or using a leather strop with jewelers rouge to polish up an edge to a glass smooth super razor sharp edge.

I kept hearing such wonderful things from people about how good of a sharpener this AccuSharp 001 knife sharpener is so I decided since I really like to have very sharp knives to give it a try. I own several other sharpeners like this both in design and in material (tungsten carbide) and have never been satisfied with the edge they produce. Before purchasing this product probably the best I had tried before were sharpeners like the Smith Abrasives Inc. PP1 Pocket Pal Knife Sharpener which has both a tungsten carbide sharpener to quickly get a semi-sharp edge and also a ceramic bladed sharpener t :2010-09-15 11:52:51

Works well but does not last...  
I ordered this item at the same time that I ordered a J.A. Henckels 8 Piece Stylus Block Set. When I first received this sharpener It worked well at keeping the knives very sharp. After using it for around four months honing the knife blades about once a month I needed to open it up and reverse the carbide inserts because it had stopped sharpening the knives.

Within another four months the sharpener was completely useless. It wouldnt work any longer. So the carbide inserts do need replacement after 30 to 40 times of use and the carbide inserts to be replaced are at a cost equal to what I had paid for the entire unit. :2010-09-15 11:52:51

I think the makers spammed this product  
Having used this item for a few months now it seems that the rave reviews are somewhat undeserved. The product puts a mildly decent edge on my blades though it doesnt seem to last. I have read other places where it might have to do with the angle though I cant say for sure. Additionally it does not feel like a quality item but I expected that for the most part considering the cost.

What I cant figure out is how this thing is so well reviewed. My only guess is that the makers got people to spam this item with their own positive reviews to get more sales. Also when checking other reviews left by some of the reviewers (there is a link by the persons name that says See all my reviews) I found that several had not left reviews on any other items. What are the odds that so many people would be compelled to leave reviews only for this item on Amazon? :2010-09-15 11:52:51
